Rose Quartz is the beloved pink variety of quartz. Unlike the well-formed points commonly associated with clear quartz and amethyst, Rose Quartz is usually found in massive formations rather than distinct crystals.
Its delicate color can range from nearly colorless blush pink to a richer rose. Microscopic mineral inclusions are responsible for both its characteristic pink coloring and the soft, cloudy translucence seen in much of the material.

HOW ROSE QUARTZ GETS ITS COLOR
The pink of Rose Quartz is more complex than it first appears.
Research has shown that the color in common massive Rose Quartz is associated with extremely small, aligned silicate mineral fibers within the quartz. These microscopic inclusions are similar to—but not exactly the same as—the mineral dumortierite.
Those tiny inclusions can also scatter light, helping create the soft, almost glowing appearance that makes Rose Quartz so recognizable.
A NORTH CAROLINA CONNECTION
Rose Quartz has a documented history right here in North Carolina.
The North Carolina Geological Survey records Rose Quartz from several areas of the state, including near the Dan River in Stokes County, the vicinity of Hiddenite in Alexander County, Fox Mountain in Iredell County, as well as locations in Cleveland, Cabarrus and Rutherford counties.
Historical records describe a dark rose variety from Fox Mountain in Iredell County as probably the best-colored Rose Quartz found in North Carolina.
